July 4th crescent moon
Contributed by: Alek Komarnitsky on 7/6/2008

A bonus for Front Range residents on this 4th of July wasa beautiful crescent moon just before the various fireworks displays fired up. I had climbed up to the roof of my house to see these and it was pretty neat seeing the moon setting over Boulder - too bad the fireworks didn't start up just a few minutes earlier to complete the picture. Due to the 5-10 second exposure, you can actually see some slight motion blur due to the movement of the moon across the sky ... plus note the airplane moving across the sky in the first image.

My family had gone to the Vista Ridge fireworks show the night before (see third picture), so this was a different experience being solo on roof top and seeing the displays from 10+ miles away. From my house in Lafayette, you could see the "bombs bursting in air" (and hear time-delayed (due to the distance) muffled booms) to the West in Boulder, to the North in Longmont, to theSouth in Louisville, and to the SouthEast. The last two pictures are a 96 second exposure of the Louisville fireworks show.

P.S. For the photo-hounds out there, these pictures were taken with a Canon 40D DSLR. A Canon 55-250 telephoto lens was used for the long-range shots, and a Canon 10-22 wide-angle lens was used for the picture of yours truly.
