Holiday Drive-In marquee will shine again
Contributed by: Laurie Dunklee on 4/12/2006

Restoration of the old Holiday Drive-In marquee, located on the west side of north 28th Street just south of Lee Hill Road, has begun and will be completed by this July.

The $33,000 project will make the old sign look like it did when it was built in 1953 - complete with blinking lights and original paint colors. The State Historical Fund is providing nearly $25,000 of the cost.

The Holiday Drive-In closed in 1988 and today the sign sits at the corner of Boulder's new mixed-use development, the Holiday Neighborhood.

The city will limit use of the marquee lights to six times per year, and the sign won't be used for commercial purposes.

"What we're anticipating is it might be lit in times when there are events like a movie in Holiday Park or maybe some kind of street market," said Cindy Brown, co-executive director for development with Boulder Housing Partners.

Supersign, Inc. of Boulder will do the restoration work, and the Holiday Neighborhood HOA will own and manage the marquee after the renovation is complete.

The State Historical Fund, a program of the Colorado Historical Society, awards grants to public and non-profit organizations to preserve Colorado's architectural and archaeological treasures for public benefit.
