War protester arrested for messing with CNN

Interrupting a local member of the media during his 15 minutes of fame led to the arrest of a 40-year-old war protester on Aug. 21, according to Boulder Police reports.

As the media resorts to interviewing itself awaiting the arrival of Ramsey suspect John Mark Karr, Seth Brigham, of Boulder, apparently wanted to clue Boulder Camera running columnist Mike Sandrock into his own theory by whispering in his ear during an interview with CNN, police said.

"John Karr had nothing to do with JonBenet's death," was what the suspect was whispering to Sandrock during an interrupted interview near the Boulder Justice Center, according to reports. Unfortunately, Sandrock told police he couldn't hear Brigham because he was wearing an earphone.

Sandrock is very important to the scores of people manning the six television satellite uplink dishes and dozens of media tents camped at the Justice Center at the corner of Canyon Boulevard and Sixth Street.

Sandrock, 48, said he met Karr near a Paris bookstore in 2002. That conversation would lead to Karr's four years of e-mails with Sandrock's friend, University of Colorado professor Michael Tracey, which may have culminated in Karr's arrest.

And with the media still awaiting Karr's arrival in Boulder, and the Boulder County District's Attorney's key news conference consisting of about a dozen quotes of "no comment," the television coverage has been pretty much limited to interviewing people no longer involved in the investigation or members of the media who believe they know the investigation

CNN Producer Rupa Mikkilineni told police that Brigham refused to leave the camera shot while the interview was taking place. Mikkilineni said she nicely asked the suspect to leave, to which he responded, "absolutely not," according to reports.

When police arrived at the scene, Brigham, 5-foot-5 and about 150 pounds, would claim that Don Garcia, 6-foot and 210 pounds had pushed him across the street. However, Mikkilineni said Garcia -- who apparently is assisting news crews at the Justice Center, although he won't say which -- merely stood "very close" to Brigham.

Brigham was arrested on suspicion of two counts of third-degree harassment, a misdemeanor. He allegedly told police he was only exercising his rights of free speech.

In a phone interview, Brigham said he had been down at the Justice Center for the past few days protesting the Iraq war, and was returning home after having dinner on Pearl Street when he came across his friend, Sandrock, getting ready doing an interview.

"I was teasing him, ... saying 'what are you going to say today? Why didn't you come out and say this four years ago? My intention is to say, 'this is all garbage, why not get to the real news?'"

In an interview Thursday, Sandrock said that both he and former assistant district attorney Trip DeMuth had been waiting in the heat for an hour, miked and ready for a live shot that almost never came because Brigham was being so disruptive.

"He basically ruined the show for us. We were all miked up and then he came right behind us and wouldn't go away. If he just wanted to talk to me he should have waited until it was over."

Brigham confirmed that members of the media were already upset with him attempting to protest the war during their JonBenet coverage.

"I have been obnoxious," he said.

However, he said that it was Don Garcia, a television engineer, who shoved him across Sixth Street and pushed him down on the Justice Center lawn.

"He was bigger than me, and he was mean," Brigham said.

Garcia, when first contacted, said he was setting up a shot for Fox News. On a subsequent call, he questioned why a member of the media would want to question him about the incident and noted he was only at the Justice Center "helping friends."

"Why are you questioning me?" he asked. "He was drunk. ... He was the one that police took away (for) badgering one of your comrades. There's eight witnesses who will tell you (that I didn't push Brigham)."

Garcia said he stood in front of Brigham and Brigham backed off, all the way across the street, and then jumped into his arms and screamed, saying he had been hit.

"I never touched him," Garcia said. "You can't stand behind someone's shot. It isn't safe. He was in the street and three cars almost hit him."

Sandrock said he believed several cameramen got between Brigham and the shot.

"They were real professional, most of them have dealt with this before so they know what to do," Sandrock said. "He was trying to egg them on a bit."

Sandrock said he has run with Brigham, "so I do know him."

"I think Seth's had got plenty of attention. He just doesn't understand there's a time to yell and scream and a time to back off. When he's calm he's an interesting person."

Meanwhile, Brigham's anti-war protesting at the JonBenet camp has apparently come to an end.

"I can't even get to within 100 yards of the scene," Brigham said.

Just because you're on TV or work for a TV station doesn't mean you have any more rights than the rest of us. So what if he was whispering in someone's ear and wouldn't leave the camera man's shot. He can stand where he wants and say what he wants, regardless if they're working. It's his street too.

"...quite an opportunist in many ways." Mr Pot, meet Mr Kettle.

Brigham sounds like an insufferable prick. Talk about an "opportunist"!

These media types are all covering for themselves. I've known Mike Sandrock for over ten years, see him at the Trident on a regular basis, run with him sometimes, brought shoes to Africa for him and discuss literature, as well. He calls me a friend. He was on my e-mail list until he charged me with harrassment. Ask some of his friends. I know a lot about him. Not very good friend, I've found out, as he hardly ever follows through on promises. Always looking out for himself, quite an opportunist in many ways.
