Seven horses were impounded and removed from Dry Creek Arabians, Niwot Equestrian on March 15 by Boulder County Sheriff deputies after the horses were found to be in "deplorable" conditions, according to a press release from Sgt.
Heidi Prentup
of the sheriff's office.
"The Sheriff's Office obtained the warrant after receiving numerous complaints about the living conditions and the poor physical condition of the horses at the business," Prentup said.
"The officers found the conditions at the property to be deplorable. Horses were found to be standing in stalls filled at least a foot deep with feces and urine, having no dry place to stand or lie down."
Prentup also said those horses had inadequate feed, with only two partial large bales of alfalfa available for the 47 horses that were kept on approximately 4 acres of property.
"The proprietor of the business,
Marcy Trescott-Helmick,
said the majority of the horses were not hers, but were being boarded with her by other owners," Prentup said. "Seven horses were impounded and removed from the property. They were taken to Colorado Horse Rescue because of their dire condition.
"Two additional horses would have been removed, but were not due to concerns for the Officers and the horses' welfare. Officers were not able to safely halter and trailer them due to the condition of their stall and the fact that they had never been halter trained. These two and 11 additional horses were left on the property under a 'Notice of Warning' with strict instructions as to their care, which will be followed closely by the Sheriff's Office. The remaining 7 horses were found to be in acceptable condition."
Prentup said animal control officers who evaluated the horses are trained and commissioned by the Colorado Department of Agriculture to evaluate the living condition of livestock as well as their physical condition. The system used to determine overall health of horses, measure body fat in six major parts of the animal's anatomy.
