A 62-year-old man is being treated at BoulderCommunityHospital today after benefitting from aquick response by teammates, two off-duty fire and police employees and the facility's AED (automated external defibrillator). The man collapsed at about 8:35 p.m. on Monday, July 28, while sitting in the dugout at Stazio Ball Fields, 2445 Stazio Drive in Boulder.Teammates began assisting the man and shouting for help, asking if there was a doctor on scene. Off-duty firefighter
Brian Marron and off-duty police officer
John Smith were warming up for a softball game of their own on an adjacent field. The two play ball recreationally for a team of fire and police personnel called Guns and Hoses. The pair ran over, determined the man was not breathing and took over chest compressions and ventilation.
After a few rounds of CPR,
Jay Keavany, city of Boulder Parks and Recreation field supervisor at Stazio, ran up with an AED that is kept at the ball fields. The AED was placed at the facility for use in these types of emergencies just two months ago.
The officer and firefighter used the AED in conjunction with CPR to revive the man. When fire crews, police and paramedics arrived, he was breathing on his own and was able to respond to them. He was transported to the hospital, where he remains today.
All of those involved say a combination of citizen action, a professional response by fire, police and recreation employees who were in the right place at the right time and the newly installed equipment contributed to reviving the man.
