Meet Board of Education candidate Jim Reed

My name: Jim Reed

My age:
37

My family: Wife, 3 daughters (8,6 &4)

Education: B.S. Chemical Engineering, CU-Boulder

What I do: I've managed IT systems for various Boulder County Companies for 17 years. Currently employed as the IT Manager, JovianP4

My favorite place in town to hang out: Scott Carpenter Park. My kids love the rocketship, and it's one of the best places to see the 4 th of July fireworks.

What I like most about living here: The scenery, and diversity of both people and backgrounds.

My interests and hobbies: With 3 young kids, I don't have much free time, but when I do, its spent catching up on science fiction books.

My favorite thing to cook: Waffles, they're not just for breakfast anymore.

People who inspire me (and how): My grandmother, who was always there for me, and taught me the meaning of honesty, integrity and that time is a precious gift whether given or received.

How I have contributed to the community: Currently serving as the legislative chair for the Lafayette Elementary PTA, member of the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee (district-wide) and am the Liaison between the CBOC and the IT Advisory Committee

The biggest issues facing Boulder Valley School District: We're still inadequately funded by the state. I'd like to see our PPOR come up to a level that can make Coloradans proud. Stratification in our schools and a lack of diversity in hiring need to be addressed. Communication and trust issues remain at the forefront for many, parents, community members and teachers often feel marginalized.

Why I am running: My wife and I have three children under the age of eight.Starting at the building level, I've made the commitment to join those who roll up their sleeves and work with our community to improve our schools. I've worked on district committees and on state issues. I've been inspired by local leaders, such as Brandon Shaffer, and am proud of his endorsement. I believe my style of creative collaboration is a good fit as we transition to make a great district better.

If elected to the school board, I will work to reduce stratification, narrow the achievement gap, and invest for the future in early childhood education, technology & sustainability.
