Adoptable Mutts, Pups at PC's Pantry on Saturday
Contributed by: Barbara Millman on 3/9/2008

Adoptable mutts and puppies rescued by The Misha May Foundation, a Colorado mixed breed rescue, will be featured on Saturday, March 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at PC's Pantry for Dogs, at 2600 30th Street in Boulder. The unique non-profit provides whatever is needed to help the dogs become adoptable, whether it be affordable training or medical treatment.

"We are completely blind to breed, age, handicap or infirmity, because we believe all dogs deserve a loving home," said Misha May founder/executive director Lorraine May.

Among those looking for that home on Saturday will be Madge, a diminutive black lab/pit bull mix who three months ago was dropped off at an area shelter, pregnant and about to give birth. Her owners had said they didn't want the puppies. Unprepared to handle the new family, the shelter turned to Misha May.

"Puppies are falling through the cracks. When puppies are in trouble, the situation for adult dogs is always worse," said May. "People have to start spaying and neutering dogs. That negligence leads to the inevitable."

In the last three months, Misha May has not only rescued Madge, but also another pregnant dog, Suzie Q, a boxer/lab mix, and Misty, a husky/shepherd mix and her newborns. Suzie Q. was found wandering in Denver and ready to give birth. No one claimed her. Misty and her two young puppies were dumped at a shelter.

Because "four out of ten families will give up the dog they choose within the first year ( http://best-dog-breed-for-children.com/cb.html), Misha May emphasizes training as a way to keep dogs in forever homes. They teach classes and consult on behavior for both the public and rescue dogs.

"We are very careful about adoptions," said May. "We have a rigorous process to assure that we have the right match of family with dog. People can't adopt dogs on the spot. We check references, fences and more. We want to give our dogs stability and love in a forever home."

Misha May needs people to foster, adopt and also help with fundraising. To learn more, go to mishamayfoundation.org. or call 303.239.0382. Tax-deductible donations will help save a dog's life.
