Seniors get pampered at Spring Wellness Fair

Golden West, a senior living community in Boulder for more than 40 years, recently celebrated spring by hosting a Wellness Fair. The fair invited residents, families, staff and the general community to get valuable information on health and wellness, receive important preventive health screenings and get pampered through free massages, manicures and makeup consultations.

The fair was put on in conjunction with Arbonne International, Kaiser Permanente, and Medically Based Fitness. The City of Boulder Senior Services, RSVP and Special Transit provided information on their services to area seniors. Walgreens pharmacy offered consultations with a pharmacist and conducted bone density screenings; Dr. Michael Travis provided dental screenings and denture adjustments; Major Medical Supply provided wheelchair and walker adjustments as well as checked attendees' pulse rates and oxygen saturation levels. Dieticians from Morrison Senior Dining answered questions on nutrition, and Kaiser Permanente's optical department cleaned eyeglasses. In addition, Dr. Aaron Snyder, of Kaiser Permanente, gave a presentation entitled "Five Tips for Healthy Aging." An independent nurse checked blood pressures, and Medically Based Fitness conducted balance screenings.

As for pampering, the Southwest School of Acupuncture gave ear treatments; a massage therapist offered five-minute chair massages; an instructor from Medically Based Fitness led a gentle yoga class, and an independent instructor provided an introduction to meditation. Representatives from Arbonne International gave hand massages, mini-manicures and makeup consultations. Attendees could also get their palms read for five dollars. Finally, representatives from Silpada Designs, Urban Trader, and a purse pin collection sold jewelry and a portion of their proceeds benefitted the Golden West Foundation's work to secure funding to assist those lower income residents at Golden West.

"It is always a good idea for people to focus more on overall health and well being," said Kathleen Charles, Director of Community Relations at Golden West, on why the Community decided to host the event. "At Golden West we focus a lot on health and wellness, because elders in our society deserve all the pampering and special treatment they can get! Spring was a great time to share that focus and encourage the general community to join us and treat themselves for one day." The Wellness Fair was well received by everyone in attendance and considered a great success.
