The Radio Reading Service of the Rockies (RRSR) celebrates fifteen years of broadcasting the reading of ink print materials for Colorado's blind, visually impaired, and print impaired residents. All materials are read by dedicated volunteers. Until the formation of RRSR in 1990, Colorado was one of only ten states in the nation that did not have a radio reading service. On October 21, 1991, RRSR went on-the-air, broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days-a-week.
RRSR currently broadcasts over 95 newspapers from across the State of Colorado giving blind, visually impaired and print handicapped access to detailed information that can keep them aware of local issues, people and events in individual communities. Employment opportunities, calendars of events, public service announcements, and weekend entertainment news are read weekly. Magazines, Spanish language programming, children's programs and other original programs are also broadcast. RRSR provides data which allows people to make informed consumer decisions, be apprised of the latest in health/disability/senior issues, continue the process of education, be aware of the latest employment opportunities and remain viable and independent members of society.
All RRSR services are provided at no cost to the listener. RRSR broadcasts may be heard through the Secondary Audio Programming (SAP) of Rocky Mountain PBS, specially made pre-tuned radios provided by RRSR, Information-On-Demand on a touch tone phone (menu system), live broadcast via telephone, live streaming and podcasting at www.rrsr.org. Program schedules are provided in large print, Braille, and audio format. Staff are available to assist listeners in equipment set up and use of services.
The Radio Reading Service of the Rockies is located at 2200 Central Avenue, Suite A in Boulder. For more information on registering as a listener or a volunteer reader, call 303-786-777 or visit www.rrsr.org.
