Seniors Collaborate Teaching Each Other Computers
Contributed by: Ann Di Iorio on 10/20/2006

In the year 2000, the beginning of the new Millennium, I decided that in order to keep up with the many changes in our world I would have to learn some basic computer skills. I knew how to run the computer programs specific to my office, but I really knew nothing about "computing". I enrolled in some classes at the college level and found out very quickly that the information technology age had just passed me by; I thought there was no way I would catch the runaway train. It wasn't until I discovered the SeniorNet Longmont Learning Center that I realized I actually could! I started out as a student; now I have become a volunteer instructor and coach for others who are in the same boat that I was in just a few short years ago. SeniorNet has not only afforded me the opportunity to learn and to grow, but has also connected me with others who I now know will be my lifelong friends.

SeniorNet, an international non-profit organization, grew out of a research project funded by the Markle Foundation in 1986 to determine if computers and telecommunications could enhance the lives of older adults. Since then the organization has benefited millions of people 50 and older and has grown to over 240 Learning Centers throughout the United States and other countries. Through a cooperative effort among SeniorNet, the Longmont Senior Center and Front Range Community College, we are blessed to have the only learning center in the state of Colorado right here in Longmont! The Longmont Learning Center is a computer lab environment in which seniors can learn about computers from their peers in a customized and supportive environment.

SeniorNet members learn and teach each other to use computers and communications technologies to accomplish a variety of tasks. They learn everything from sending and receiving e-mails, including sending attachments that may have been edited in a PhotoShop program to writing their own life stories. Learning some basic necessary technical skills to protect your computer from viruses is also part of the varied curriculum. Our Longmont Learning Center volunteers and members share a desire to continue learning and a willingness to impart their knowledge to others, as is evident in our Outreach Programs at a local senior residential community and our participation in an advocacy program for adults with developmental disabilities.

As a non profit organization, theLongmont Learning Center relies on grants and other contributors to keep pace with new emerging technologyso that we can continue to meet the needs of computer using seniors in our community.

This year, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers, the Longmont Learning Center celebrated six years of empowering older adults. We hope to continue this vital service for many years to come!
