Think that bassoons are boring? Fed up with the flute? The words "fun" and "classical music" don't fit together for a lot of people, but the Colorado Music Festival is breaking down this stereotype with a series of informal, inexpensive Friday performances designed specifically for family audiences. The 45-minute concerts will be held on themornings of June 29, July 13 and July 27 at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder. Tickets are just $5/person.
Each "Family Fun Concert" features 3-5 musicians from a single section of the orchestra (June 29 = The Flute Family, July 13 = The Wild World of Drums, and July 27 = Strings & Things) with lively narration by another CMF player. The performers demonstrate how their instruments work, how they achieve certain sounds and how they play together as a section.
For kids interested in music, and for parents who recognize the benefits of exposure to the arts, these concerts are a great opportunity. At $5/ticket, they are open to all, and with Chautauqua Auditorium's 1,200 seats, there is plenty of room for everyone.
