This evening I was having a typical night of restlessness and I could not seem to sleep. I decide to flip on the television and I land on some sort of news show called
Nancy Grace. The first thing I see before I change the channel is the typical "breaking news" headline scrolling across the screen. Now as a future journalist, I dive in and decide to remain on the CNN station and find out what the scoop was.
The first thing I read at the bottom of the screen is "40,000 people at risk for HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B." So I automatically assume it's one of those health beat type of stories talking about a third world country or something like that.
Nope -- this news station was telling viewers that 40,000 patients in Nevada are at risk for contracting those three deadly diseases! Doctors at a clinic in Southern Neveda were instructing their nurses to re-use their syringes!!!!
That's right people -- doctors apart of this so-called amazing health care system we have in this country were instructing people to RE-USE SYRINGES! This means they inject one patient, clean the cyringe, switch the needle and inject another and another.
Why did this happen, you may ask? Well it is being reported that there have been five clinics in southern Nevada shut down for re-using syringes and possibly infecting 40,000 patients with HIV Hepatitis C or Hepatitis B! Apparently doctors and nurses were being instructed to re-use syringes on patients in an effort to save money! Because theses clinics were supposedly losing money, they decided it may be a fantastic idea to re-use syringes and infect people with diseases they don't even know that they have yet.
This is an absolute outrage. We as Americans pay way too much for health coverage that is supposed to be guaranteed safe and quality health care. Too many people in this country put their trust and a lot of their money into insurance companies and the health care system because it is supposed to work to their advantage.
This horrific event proves that maybe American health care isn't as amazing as it has been set out to be. If there is so much money in insurance and being poured into the medical clinics and hospitals, then why in the world are nurses re-using syringes in an effort to save money!?
AllI can say is thatI hope this is a huge eye-opener to the American people especially in the upcoming election. I think we should all take a deeper look at our health care and realize it isn't so amazing after all. Even if this event is a so-called "accident" there is going to be hell to pay financially, as well as ethically and lawfully.
Brace yourselves America --hell is about to freeze over and a humongous can of worms is about to be opened.
