Saturday night, the amazing happened. Of the 52, 951 people in attendance for the Colorado vs. Florida State game, at least 40,000 people wore black. The amount of people that actually wore the color is up in the air, but at first glance around 95% of CU students and around 80% of the rest of the crowd (excluding the Florida State fans) wore the color.
The students and fans, weren't issuing this "Folsom Blackout" to protest, but to show their school spirit and show the nation how they were united in front of a primetime audience on ESPN. Though the Buffaloes lost the game, no one can doubt the school spirit shown on that night.
In recent years, the Athletic Department has been pushing for fans to wear yellow and gold for their "Shoulder to Shoulder Gold Rush" campaign, but thanks to two seniors, Saturday night was different. In fact the Athletic Department really had nothing to do with the "Blackout."
Seniors
Andrew Stuper and
Scott Greenwood came up with the idea last spring, and it wasn't till after the Arizona State game on September 8 th did the idea catch on fire. Thanks to the social networking internet site "Facebook," thousands of students signed up, and passed the news on to their friends.
When asked what he thought of the "Blackout," Freshman
Will Van Treuren replied, "I thought it was a great idea, and we all showed a lot of school spirit. We should do blackouts more often."
Though the "Blackout" was a success, don't expect to see a lot of black at any upcoming football games. The student body loves their gold, so expect a lot more gold shirts for Saturday's game against Miami (Ohio).
