CU Cycling Buffalo Bicycle Bonanza a success

On Sunday the University of Colorado Cycling team hosted day two of the Buffalo's Bicycle Bonanza at the East Campus Research Park in Boulder where Colorado placed fourth or better in all five races.

"We've really enjoyed putting on this event and seeing everyone get started in mountain biking," said senior and former CU Cycling President Bryan Alders. "That's what collegiate racing is all about, getting people involved in the sport and making sure they have a good time doing it."

Alders, a geography major enjoyed more than just the event, but also a second place finish in the men's-A short track as well.

"From the beginning we set a pretty fast pace, and I just decided at the start to kind of break it apart, so it would be just a few of us upfront, which worked pretty well," Alders said.

In collegiate cycling, riders are grouped into three classes, A, B, and C.

In the C-class, riders are usually just beginners to mountain biking and are curious about racing.

The B-class is the intermediate and skill building class where riders range from upgraded C-class riders to riders who are looking to move up to the A-Class.

The A-class is the fastest class whom many of the riders are professionals.

"To move up to A's you have to have competed in B's and you have to have two top five finishes in the B category," said senior rider and Buffalo's Bicycle Bonanza coordinator Abby Carroll.

Day one featured two events, cross-country and mountain cross, while day two featured just one, short track. The cross-country event took place at Tahosa Boy Scout Camp near Ward, while the mountain cross event took place at the Dacono BMX course in Dacono.

"Cross-country is a long loop, ours was only five miles, but the loop can be anywhere from five to fifteen," Carroll said. "Our loop yesterday was probably one of the most technical courses that we've had this collegiate season, there was a lot of just really rooty places and rocks, and it was really steep, so it was a really challenging course.

"Mountain cross we had it on a BMX course so four riders go all at once. Usually you do it on slalom bikes, which makes it easier to do wheelies and jumps and stuff.

"Then short track is a 0.8 to a mile loop that you do for about 20 minutes and whoever does the most laps in 20 minutes is the winner."

The Bonanza featured more than just the CU team but teams from Colorado State, Colorado School of Mines, Metro State, Fort Lewis College, the United States Air Force Academy, Wyoming and a few other schools.

However, of those schools three dominated the two day event: Colorado, Colorado State, and Fort Lewis College.

Fort Lewis was the force to be reckoned with of the three, winning nine of the fifteen events, including the men's-A short track on Sunday.

"It was my first collegiate race, so I'm pretty happy with the result," said freshman Rotem Ishai of Fort Lewis College, the winner of the men's-A short track. "I wasn't thinking about winning the race, I was just thinking about the best move at the best time."

Ishai dominated the field, with only Colorado's Bryan Alders who could keep up with him.

"He [Ishai] is definitely a strong person," Alders said. "He's an Israeli national champion, so it was kind of an honor to be on [the back of] his wheel."

Ishai will head back to Israel to compete in the Israel Nationals one week before the U.S. nationals in Banner Elk, NC on Oct. 23-28.

On the women's side, Amanda Miller of Colorado State won the women's-A short track beating Colorado's Eszter Horanyi, who usually dominates this event.

"It was hard, it was hot, and dusty and fast," said Horanyi. "Some days you got it, some days you don't, today it didn't quite happen."

The main talk of the event by the riders was the technicality of the course and how much fun it was to ride.

"The course was super fun, there was lots of bank turns, jumps, keeps it interesting, steep climbs, fun dips, so it was a really good time," Alders said. "It's definitely the definition of mountain biking."

Next up for Colorado is the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships the next two weekends in Fort Lewis College in Durango and Mesa State College in Grand Junction, before heading out to North Carolina for Nationals.
