Buffs score eleven in season opener against Metro

On Saturday, the University of Colorado (1-0-0) hockey team opened up its regular season with an 11-1 goal fest win against Metro State (0-1-0) at the Ice Ranch in Littleton.

The game saw six Colorado players score three points or more in returning head coach Ken Fikis' first game.

It didn't take long for the Buffs to get on the board, 73 seconds to be exact when Josh Loomis got the first goal of the season on a power play.

Three minutes later, A.J. Koller added another power play goal extending CU's lead to two.

All night, the Roadrunners couldn't stay out of the penalty box, racking up 15 penalties. The undiscipline shown by Metro State proved to be the difference with the Buffaloes scoring eight power plays goals on the night.

The second period would start similar to the first, with the Buffs scoring three times in the first 4:30, including a goal 31 seconds into the period by last year's team scoring leader, Conor Williams. Sean Carpenter and Koller had the other two goals for the Buffs.

Carpenter would add three assists in the game and would also get to spend some quality time in the box with two penalties.

With 7:57 left in the second period, Ryan Yudez of Metro State would get the Roadrunners on the board, but Colorado would score three more times before intermission, taking a commanding 9-1 lead into the locker room.

Andrew Neitenbach, Josh Wirth, and Kevin Alpert would get the three goals for the Buffs.

Colorado would add three more goals in third from Max Myers, Nick Hartnett, and Alpert to give CU the dominating win.

CU's defense held strong throughout the game, only allowing 20 shots through 60 minutes of play, giving goaltenders Kevin Litinsky (20 min.) and Marc Torrente (40 min.) a pretty quiet night.

On the other side, the Buffs pounded Roadrunner goaltender Andrew Carlson, firing 43 shots at the former Pueblo County High School product.

After CU's convincing win, the team will get a few days off before they head to Greeley to take on Northern Colorado on Friday Oct. 3 at the Greeley Ice Haus.

On Saturday, the team will be back in Boulder for their home opener against Utah Sate at 7:30 P.M.

Last season the Buffs shutout the Aggies 8-0, en route to a 6-0 start for the season.

All Colorado home games take place at the CU Ice Rink inside the Student Recreation Center (NW from Folsom Field) and are free to the public.
