On Saturday night, the CU varsity hockey (5-3-0) took on San Jose State (2-4-0) for game 2 of this family weekend at the CU ice arena inside the student recreation center.
Coming off one of their worse losses in recent history against Kansas on Friday night, the Buffaloes came out firing on all cylinders and beat the Spartans 8-0, to give them their fifth win of the season.
Colorado took control from the very start thanks to junior
Max Myers finding the back of the net around six minutes into the game.
The game would stay 1-0 until 3:41 remaining in the period when sophomore
Mark Viau would put a beautifully placed puck from fellow sophomore,
Matt Ulrich, past the Spartan goalie to extend CU's lead by two.
Myers would add another goal before the end of the period to give Colorado a dominating 3-0 lead heading into the locker room. Myers would finish with 2 goals and 1 assist on the game.
The Buffs would continue where they left off in the start of the second, when sophomore
Conor Williams fired a wrist shot top shelf beating San Jose State goaltender
Michael Steininger to give CU the four goal lead.
The CU power play went one for nine on the night, but it was their penalty kill that had most of the team's success.
In the remainder of the second period, the Buffs would score two shorthanded goals by newcomer
Nick Hartnett and sophomore
Mike Nunley to give them the 6-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Buffs scored two more in the third with senior
Brad Edelberg getting his first of the game at 17:01 and then
Erich Seufert notching his fifth of the season of season at 8:39.
CU fired 50 shots on Steininger on the night, while San Jose State could manage 27 on sophomore goaltender
Kevin Litinsky.
After not dressing on Friday against Kansas, Litinsky was amazing in net earning his first shutout of the season.
Litinsky had to be on his game in the third period when the Spartans went on a shot rampage firing 13 at the second year goalie from Calabasas, Calif.
Next up for the Buffs will be two Utah teams who will make the trip across the Rockies to Boulder.
On Friday, CU will host the Utah Utes at 8:00 P.M., while on Saturday they'll take on Weber State at 7:30 P.M.
All home games are played at the CU ice arena inside the student recreation center on campus.
