The city of Boulder invites people of all ages to walk or run in the Ninth Annual Pearl Street Mile at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, beginning at the pedestrian crosswalk at 14th and Pearl streets. This is the final event of the 2005 Boulder Race Series and the championship finals for the inaugural America’s Downtown Mile Race Series. Top runners from The TC1 Mile in Minnesota, Boise’s Mainstreet Mile, and Ft. Collin’s Mountain Avenue Mile have won trips to this year’s event for the championship finals.
The mile event consists of seven different waves each highlighting specific age groups. The kid’s 800 is the first wave with a non-competitive run for children eight years and under. Wave number two is the friends and family wave for walkers and non-competitive runners. Wave number three is the high school wave, followed by the Beauty and the Beast Wave, for females 40 plus and males 50 plus. Next is the competitive males masters wave for males 40-49, then the women’s open wave and finally the men’s open wave. Prize money is being offered in the open and master divisions.
Pearl Street Mile prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in five year age groups. "Green Transportation Awards" will be given to all finishers who use some form of alternative transportation to get to the event. Additional festivities will include Bongo the Balloon Man and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream for participants.
Advanced registration is $15 per person; race day registration is $25 per person, per race. The entry fee includes a race shirt and race goodies. Walk-in registration is available at Boulder running stores and the city’s Parking Services office located at 1500 Pearl Street, suite 302. Online registration is available at www.boulderraceseries.com.
The Pearl Street Mile began in 1997 as a celebration hosted by the city of Boulder’s Downtown Management Commission to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Pearl Street Mall. The race benefits the city of Boulder’s Downtown Employee Transportation programs which promote green transportation.
