Boulder Horseshoe Club News
Contributed by: Lou Conklin on 11/1/2005

Every summer, between 30 and 40 members of the Boulder Horseshoe Club form teams and pitch for 12-16 weeks at the courts located next to the YMCA on Mapleton Avenue.   With three pitchers to a team, the group is split into two leagues, with one pitching on Tuesday evening and the other on Thursday evening.  At the end of the season, the winning teams from each night meet for a city playoff, with the victorious team claiming the title of City Champs.
Horseshoes is a game for all ages and abilities; members in Colorado range from 8 to 89 years old, and pitching averages (the number of ringers out of 100 shoes pitched) range from 4% to 75%.  Men, women, and children gather to not only hone their pitching skills, but to meet new friends, catch up with old friends, and generally socialize and have fun.  There are nearly 400 members statewide, and various leagues throughout the state, as well as tournaments which run during the summer (at parks in various cities and towns), and in the winter (our one indoor facility is located in Milliken, about 50 miles north of Denver, just east of I-25).
This summer in Boulder, the Thursday night team of Don Conklin, Lou Conklin, and Jeff Howat emerged triumphant, and carried home the trophy, which they'll keep until this time next year, when it will be passed on to the 2006 City Champs.  The trio also went on to win the title of  Colorado State League Champions.
We eagerly welcome  new members, and anyone interested in getting involved in the sport can find more information on-line at www.horseshoepitching.com, or call the Colorado Regional Director, Don Conklin, at 303-499-9091.
