Seven athletes from Boulder's Northern Colorado Fencers qualified for the US Fencing Association's Junior Olympics Competition, held in Albuquerque, NM, on February 13th through 16th.
Kathryn Bernstein placed third (field of 148 athletes) in the Cadet Women's Epee competition (Under 17) and 19th (field of 137 athletes) in the Junior Women's Epee competition (Under 19). Nina Van Loon placed 8th (field of 14 athletes) in the Junior Women's Epee competition and 22nd (field of 151 athletes) in the Cadet Women's Foil competition. Gordon Osterman placed 25th (field of 203 athletes) in the Junior Men's Epee competition. Athletes finishing in thetop 8 receive medals, and athletes finishing in the top 32 receive national points and qualify for the US Fencing Association's Summer National Championship.
Northern Colorado Fencers was started by Head Coach Gary Copeland in Boulder, CO in 1979. NCF offers something for everyone, from summer camps and classes for beginning 8-year-olds to individual coaching for internationally ranked teens and adults. NCF's mission is to enable every member to reach his or her potential and to make this achievement as satisfying and rewarding as possible. For some, this means competing and winning fencing titles at the highest level. For others, it means enrichment through recreational fencing. Competitive and recreational fencers of all ages are welcome.
