Imagine Peace Paint-In
Contributed by: Dana Cain on 6/18/2008

What:
Giant Paint-In set for Civic Center Park
on John Lennon's Birthday
Hundreds of artists and over a dozen live bands will be gathering in Denver's Civic Center Park this year on John Lennon's Birthday, October 9, for the first Imagine Peace Paint-In.
The event, organized by Dana Cain and approved by Yoko Ono Lennon, will benefit Yoko's ImaginePeace.com organization, the Campaign for the Dept of Peace, and the Student Peace Alliance.

"I was watching The U.S. vs. John Lennon, explains Cain, "and I was reading Giving by Bill Clinton, and the idea hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew that I had to do an event that would honor John and his peace advocacy, and I knew that I had the ability to mobilize the Denver art community. A Paint-In seemed perfect - planted right in between the Denver Art Museum and the State Capitol."

Participation in the Paint-In is open to everyone. Professional artists, amateurs, hobbyists, students and anyone who feels like panting or drawing can come to the park. Art classes, from all grade levels, will also be participating. Spectators are also welcome. Admission is free to all, and art supplies will be on hand for those who don't bring their own.

Bands will be performing all day, on two stages. Each band is required to play at least one song by John Lennon, and they are encouraged to play songs pertaining to the event's themes.

In addition to the art and music, the Paint-In will feature various local and national peace groups, food and drink vendors and a few other vendors who fit in with the themes of peace, art and music. Participating artists have the option to gather pledges for their participation in the event, to help raise money for peace.

Dana Cain has organized more than 100 events in the Denver area, including the Denver Modernism Show, the Colorado Chocolate Festival and the Athena Festival. She won last year's Westword Best of Denver award for "Best Arty Markets."

Admission to the Paint-in is free. Hours are 10 am - 6pm on Thursday, October 9. Artists and bands may register online (free). More information is at www.paint-in.org .
