What:
Reserve a seat aboard the universally accessible, motorized Eagle Express for a trip to great wildlife watching opportunities. Weekend Eagle Express rides start on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11 and will continue through September. The Eagle Express only holds 13 passengers, so reserve a spot for a Saturday trip from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. or a Sunday trip from 11 a.m. - 1p.m. by calling Barr Lake's Nature Center at (303) 659-6005. There is no fee for an Eagle Express ride; however, donations are appreciated for vehicle fuel, care and maintenance. A parks pass is required for all vehicles entering the park.
A park volunteer will provide interesting information on park wildlife and history as the vehicle travels the Lake Perimeter Trail. En route to the bald eagle nest-viewing site and the Heron and Cormorant Rookery at mile marker three, visitors can keep a look out for the park's inhabitants who may fly, crawl or gallop past the Eagle Express on the way there.
An Eagle Express ride is an opportunity to join the celebration of this spring's hatch of eaglets and 22 years of bald eagle nesting and public viewing in Barr Lake 's wildlife refuge. The habitat of Barr Lake is perfect for one pair of nesting bald eagles with large old cottonwoods, rich food sources, and little disturbance. A pair of bald eagles has attended a nest in the wildlife refuge since 1986.
On April 4, volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory's Bald Eagle Watch observed restless parents feeding young in the nest. If all goes well, the juveniles will fly from the nest in late June and remain in the area with their parents most of the summer.
