Purple at 30,000 feet

My wife Tina and I are originally from New York, but we've been avid Rockies fans since moving here in 1995. Our three children ( Nick 10, Peter 8, Christina 4) have grown up as Rockies fans and watch every game they can.

Last October, we took the kids back east to visit family and friends (who were routing for the Red Sox) during the World Series and we wore purple shirts and Rockies jerseys the entire time - showing our true colors to everyone.

As a memorable treat for the kids, my wife and I decided to take our kids to World Series Game 5 on Monday night in Denver. We watched Game one, two and three anxiously from New York and were dying to make sure we got the opportunity to see our Rockies at a World Series game back home in Denver. We had already bought our airline tickets to return from NY on that same Monday of the game. But, we were so anxious to get home and fearful that something might go wrong with the flight preventing us from attending the game, we decided to change our flights to leave NY on Sunday - one day earlier - which would be our "safety net." However, the airline didn't care about our story and didn't allow us to go standby on the Monday flight. We were forced to buy an additional 5 tickets back to Denver one day early on Sunday to make sure we wouldn't miss the Monday night game.

We nervously flew home and listened to game 4 on the plane that Sunday. The pilot was also from Denver and found a way to have the passengers listen to the broadcast on the plane. We cheered for our Rockies on the plane all the way back to Denver and raced to our car parked at DIA so we could listen to the end of the game. We were all hoping the Rockies won Game 4 so we could cheer them in person the next day at Game 5.

Sadly, as we left the parking lot, we listened quietly as the game ended with a Rockies defeat. We sat speechless all the way home and realized that our dream of a family night at Game 5 wouldn't be possible since the series ended.

Although we never did get to celebrate at Game 5 with our beloved Rockies, the day's experience flying home together and supporting our Rockies throughout our trip was one that our family still talks about and will remember for many years. We told our children not to be upset but to celebrate the great accomplishment of our young Rockies team, and to keep cheering them into future World Series again.

The kids love the Rockies, watch every game and are looking forward to the day we see and cheer them in person - as we planned to do for our family trip last year. Maybe that could happen this year which would complete our story. Regards, John
