The 2007 Adams County Crop Walk held on October 20th was a resounding success. This year's walk produced almost double the donations of the 2006 walk, coming in at slightly over $4,000. The walk started and ended at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church's Shepherd's Hall. In leiu of the rent normally charged for use of the facility, food donations were made by the participants to the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
The walk started at 9 a.m. and was followed by a complimentary breakfast for the walkers. After the breakfast, a drawing was held for tickets to an Avalanche hockey game, generously provided by Kroenke Sports and also a $50 gift card provided by the Rock Bottom Foundation and Old Chicago at Arapahoe Crossing, managed by Chad Filloon. The drawings raised an extra $300 for the cause. The money collected this year almost doubled the proceeds from 2006, which came in at a little over $2000.
CROP Walks have been going on nationally for the past sixty years and raised millions of dollars, over 264 million in the last twenty years alone, to feed the less fortunate. The local Adams County walk has raised nearly $100,000 in the last twenty years as well.
CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. The walks not only feed the hungry, but they also provide for vocational training and supplies, even micro business startup loans to allow these folks to provide for themselves. The program is run under the auspices of Church World Services, and also helps provide for the basic daily needs of refugees as well. CWS currently supports community centers in eleven refugee camps in Darfur.
