Brighton volunteers brighten day for homeowners
Contributed by: Jeff Martinez on 5/12/2008

More than 200 Brighton volunteers on Saturday braved blustery conditions to help their neighbors as part of the city's 'Help for Homes' initiative.

During the day-long event, volunteers representing the city's commercial, faith-based and civic sectors worked with Brothers Redevelopment, the city of Brighton and Brighton Housing Justice to carry out home maintenance and repairsfor nearly a dozen of the city's low- to moderate-income homeowners. Thanks to a $12,900 grant from the Brighton Legacy Foundation, all repairs were completed free of charge.

With some repairs valued as high as $7,000 and running the gamut from gutter to fencerepair, and from house painting to yard clean-up, the effort 'spruced' several Brighton neighborhoods. For a few lucky homeowners, the repairs also promised to dramatically improve their mobility via the construction of wheelchair ramps.

Participating volunteer teams included the the Brighton Education Association, the Greater Brighton Fire Protection District, Henderson Community Church, the city's 1 st Presbyterian Church, Chapel Hills Church, Elaine's Prayer Team, Team Five Talents, Local Color Magazine/Early Morning Rotary, Brighton United Methodist Church, the Community of Christ Church, The Bridge Church, the Church of Latter Day Saints and employees from the City of Brighton.

"It might've been a cold day, but Brighton's volunteers sure warmed the hearts of local homeowners," said Mary Ann Shing, Brothers Redevelopment president. "Their efforts really showcased the care and commitment that residents really seem to have for one another. It was reallyinspiring."

That kind of response from the city's residents is among the reasons that the Brothers Redevelopment has sought to be a part of the Brighton Help for Homes initiative over the past three years.Since 2006, the 'Help for Homes' partnership has led to the repair and maintenance of more than 50Brighton homes.

'Help for Homes' is sponsored, in part, by Local Color Magazine and Diamond Vogel Paints. Additional contributors include Asphalt Specialties and American West Construction and the Brighton Senior Center.

Another Help for Homes event will take place in September. To submit an application or learn more, call Ermie Marquez 303-655-2075.
