Applewood Causes Cheer Squad to Jump for Joy
Contributed by: John Ward on 10/1/2008

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric (www.applewoodfixit.com) helps plant the seeds of success for the "rooters" of the Broomfield High School cheerleading squad, August's winner of Applewood's $1,000 "Caring Community 12 in 12 Giveaway."

The Broomfield High School Cheerleaders also won the giveaway in July 2007 making them one of the three entrants who have ever won more than once. "We really do have a random process," said John Ward, owner of Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric. "Apparently, a large number of nominations and a little luck does lead to wining twice!"

Last year, they used the money to purchase tumbling mats for the team's practices and performances. This year the squad plans to use the money for new uniforms, which will be worn to sporting events, competitions and state championships. The 25-member team is ranked second in the state out of 38 other competing cheer squads and is scheduled to compete at the cheerleading National Championship in February 2009 in Orlando, Fla.

"I know that appearance can have a big impact on performance and having new uniforms will help them be their best in their coming competitions," said Ward. "It's great to see young people involved in athletic activities, their schools and their communities."

The Broomfield Cheerleading Squad is self-funded, meaning they do not receive funding from the school or school district, but raise the money for their team through fund-raising events. The squad supports the football, soccer, basketball and wrestling teams in addition to competing in cheer competitions year round.

"The cheerleaders enjoy competing for themselves, but supporting their athletic teams is their number one priority," said Head Coach Ruthanne Phillips. "The squad's favorite time to cheer is when an athletic team competes in a state championship and the squad is there to support their schoolmates."

Applewood Plumbing Heating & Electric has served the Denver/Boulder Metro area for more than 35 years. The company has consistently been rated one of the nation's top 10 service companies by their customers and has achieved the Nexstar Network Select Service designation and the 2007 City of Golden Rotary Club's Ethics in Business Award.
