Nathan "Nate" Archuleta
is 9 years old and lives in Frederick. Nate has been battling an extremely rare and incurable disease, called Niemann-Pick Type C. You probably have not heard of this disease because it has been diagnosed in
less than 400 children world-wide
.
Children with NPC can't metabolize cholesterol and other lipids properly. Excessive amounts of cholesterol accumulate in the liver, spleen, and brain. In most cases, neurological symptoms begin appearing between ages 4 & 10. Niemann-Pick Type C is always fatal. The vast majority of children die before the age of 20 (many die before the age of 10).
Nate is a huge fan of
Carmelo Anthony
, the Denver Nuggets and the game of basketball. During basketball season, Nate wakes up to get ready for school, but before he does anything else, he runs outside to pick up the Newspaper so he can read the latest basketball "stats". Natewatches all the Nuggets games faithfully. Nate's favorite birthday gift was a pair of Carmelo basketball shoes...he actually "hugged" them.
So far, the neurological symptoms of Nate's disease have progressed slowly. Fortunately, Nate can still run, jump and play basketball. However, Nate is in a race against time.
I have never known a child more deserving of the opportunity to meet and work with Carmelo Anthony. It would truly be a "dream come true" for Nate.

At first I was a bit sad my son didn't win but that was until I read your story. I hope your son has an awesome time, he deserves it! Great job mom for making your son's dream come true.
