Blog Entry 12 of 21 It's Mommy's Turn To Talk
A chance for one mommy to get a word in and a moment to reflect.

Reunited and it feels so good

Hey Peeps-

I'm going have to keep this one short as possible because right now I'm supposed to be studying for my next test tomorrow. And right after that we are heading in the car for nice long 6 hour drive. Now driving with 3 kids for 6 hours may sound awful to you, but not for me. We just came home from Target with loads of snacks, and I plan on breaking into them before we hit I-70. Golden Oreos, Regular Oreos, chocolate covered raisins ( remind me to tell Billy to keep those to a minimum if you know what I mean) those pink wafer cookies that are made from pure sugar, gum...that sort of thing. Plus since we are going to be in the car for more than 2 hours we are setting up the dvd player. The kids are so happy they get to take movies, instead of their imaginations. This is also beneficial to Billy and I, as they will have 1-2 hour chunks of time where they aren't bugging us. We might even have a real conversation, about why my professor thinks it's okay to use the word "invaginate" at least 14 times a class.

I almost forgot to tell you why we are going on a 6 hour road trip. We are heading to a family reunion. There will be at least thirty or forty cousins, aunts, uncles, siblings, parents, gramma's...of all ages. My kids have been looking forward to this for months. They can't wait to play with cousins they rarely see, and sleep at Gramma's house. I can't wait for some good food, sitting around the fire, and listening to the stories our family loves to tell. It's a bunch of "look at me, I'm so funny, and pretty, and smart, and Irish" kind of folks sitting around loving each other despite all our faults.

I'm hoping to spend some quality time with my cousin "Crazy Tim" and his new, very sweet wife Sandra. Tim's always throwing around crazy statistics like, "air travel is safer than driving" and "at any given time, there's 5,000 planes flying, and none of them are crashing". I just nod, and say, "Oh really, that's interesting." Apparently they'll let anyone buy their own plane and get a pilot's license. He's sweet too though, and means well. I'm also going to sit by my Aunt Glee as much as possible. She always smells nice. I like people who not only practice good hygiene, but go that extra mile.

I have a couple personal goals for the reunion, one of which I will share with you. I am going to try with all that is in me, to not pinch anyone's butt. After the incident on the 4 th of July up in Cheyenne, I have done some real soul-searching, and it turns out, I am a little crazy myself, and probably ought to practice more self-control.

As soon as the reunion is over, we are heading to Seattle for a wedding. Unfortunately we have to fly this year, and in case you cared, I hate to fly. I call airplanes "death darts". I try not to share my phobia with the kids, so they can figure it out in their own time, which they will if they ever learn to read the paper or watch the news. During take-off and landing, I will try to remind myself of what Crazy Tim told me at the reunion. Even if his stats are WAY off, he might be on to something, and most likely we won't plummet to our fiery deaths.

The trip to Seattle will be eventful, as we are not only attending a wedding, but all three of our children are participating IN the wedding. Yeah, I know, right? We'll also get to spend time with Billy's family and enjoy the sights and sounds of Seattle. Try not to miss me, and maybe, if you are the praying type, you'd say a prayer for our safety. I'd be forever grateful, and if the Good Lord brings me back safe and sound, I'll be sure to fill you in on all the details. Until then...

I'm so glad I read your column this week, as I was hoping to get some irritating tune stuck in my head. Happy trails.
