Blog Entry 5 of 6 Girl Talk
I am new to Denver, a recent college graduate in Journalism. This blog will talk about all the random thoughts that cross a 23-year-old female's mind. My interests are in art, theater and writing and I would like to share that with you, my neighbors. I enjoy being with my friends, my two cats, Jack and Cessie, and plan on experiencing all the fun things to do in Denver.

Should schools host Halloween or fall parties?
Contributed by: Laura Mayo/YourHub.com   on 10/5/2007

Recently Kohl Elementary school has replaced Halloween parties at the school with fall parties instead to be more inclusive.

Children will no longer wear Halloween costumes to school and instead can wear them to the carnival held on Oct. 27 (on a weekend).

I want to know how you feel about it. Please comment if you're a parent, guardian, resident or just have a strong opinion.

I'm a parent with a child who will be in Kindergarten next year -- not at Kohl, but at Emerald. I understand the sensitivity some parents may have over graphic Halloween costumes, etc. However, my feeling is that Halloween is a part of American culture, and that it's better to acknowledge that at school by allowing dressup and a party. If a minority of parents don't want their children to be exposed to Halloween, they should be allowed to keep their kids at home during the party. I have a feeling though that the real reasons behind not having a party is the unrealistic amount of time that teachers have to spend teaching kids to take and pass tests so that schools don't lose their funding. Our kids are taught to the test, and Halloween isn't on those tests :-)

The information provided by Briggs Gamblin in your Oct. 11th article "Kohl Elementary says no to costumes" is incorrect. The decision was made by principal Kaier before the Oct. 1 meeting with parents. After 90 minutes of problem-solving for all reasons given for no party, the decision remained-no Halloween costumes, no Halloween party.
