Last night I was treated to an amazing performance by one of Germany's most famous singers- Xavier Naidoo.
Xavier Naidoo was bornOctober 2,1971 in Mannheim, Germany. His music careertook offin 1998 with the reslease of his first album, "Nicht von dieser Welt." Most recently, he released "Telegramm fuer X," which marked histenth album release. In betweenindividual albums, he has also joined with othermusicians. Themost well-known of his partnerships is Soehne Mannheims, who's album "Noiz" had several chart-topping hits. Naidoo has also toured- which iswhat he is currently doing.
"Bist du am Leben interessiert," is the concert that I attended last night. A mix of his old hits, and of course his new album, the concert really got the crowd excited and involved. I have never seen a performer with quite the stage presence that Naidoo has. It was a pleasing mix of German andEnglish, ballads andrap, and humor andlove. Above all of these elements were his amazing vocals. Naidoo's voice is one to be remembered, and hegives an amazing live performance. There is no way to really describe how greatthe concertwas besides commenting on the fact that a few of the songs, including "Oh My Lady" and "Ich kenne nichts," gave me chills. Not only his voice is amazing, but also the lyrics that he has written. They are deep and meaningful- andpartly inEnglish.
If any readers out there are looking for a really talented musician to listen to, then my suggestion is Xavier Naidoo. Even if you do not understand all of the lyrics, the music andstunning vocals are worth listening to.
A few other music suggestions for people interested in expanding their music horizons:
- Soehne Mannheims- German pop (with Xavier Naidoo)
- Wir sind helden- German pop
- Gentleman- German reggae/r&b (in English)
- Seeed- German rap
- Juli- German pop
- Fettes Brot- German hip-hop
- O-zone- Romanian dance
- Nek- Italian pop
There is a huge amount of wonderful music that never makes it to the United States. Look around, ask around, and open yourself to all that music around the world has to offer.

Hi Stephanie, I've also spent a lot of time in good ol' Germania. Spent a year in Herzberg am Harz (near Hannover) as a Rotary Exchange student then again for a semester at the University of Konstanz. What a great place! I'm jealous. Take advantage of all the great opportunities you'll have while you are there. It's hard to get back once you settle into "the real world." Student travel is the best! I was excited to read your entry about Xavier Naidoo. I brought home one of his albums when I returned from my semester abroad and listen to it often. It reminds me of some great times in Germany. Please have a hefeweizen in my honor. Prost! and good luck!

She's right, Xavier Naidoo is international cool like U2 is. Manu Chao is another great international/world artist. Spanish-born and Paris-raised, he sings in English, Spanish and French. He was also in a Punk/Ska band called Mano Negra. If you like piano music try France's Erik Satie. A real renegade for his time (just translate his famous song titles).

Others - German punk band Wizo, French rapper MC Solaar, a ton of great Swedish rock bands like the Hellacopters, the incomparable Afro-Beat innovator Fela Kuti, etc. Japan has done a lot of really cool stuff with metal and punk (bands like Defiled and Thug Murder) and the Shibuya-Kei sound is really cool. Check out DJ duo Panda No Panda. If you're into classical or folk, I'm a huge fan of Bela Bartok. He was a Hungarian composer and probably the world's first ethnomusicologist. He worked in Hungarian gypsy melodies with his classical pieces and they're absolutely great. Enjoy that terribly disjoint list of mine!
