Description:

"Experiment in Democracy" - Join us for a meeting Saturday, April 4 th from 9:30 to 11:00am at the Broomfield Senior Center.

In 1997, then Congressman David E. Skaggs, CD2, was concerned that we as a nation were drifting away from our unique belief that neighbors, friends, and folks with opposing views could discuss the issues, debate the future, and hammer out a consensus agreement to the problems of the day. By discussing issues only with like minded individuals and not obtaining input from those who disagreed with us, we were in effect "bowling alone." As a result, Congressman Skaggs organized several citizens groups to meet together as citizens of all opinions, persuasions, and beliefs to discuss issues and come to consensus. Notes were taken and sent to the Congressman for review. After 11 years we are still meeting even with the election of Congressman (now Senator) Mark Udall and Congressman Jared Polis. All present must agree to the statement, idea, criticism, or concept written for it to qualify as a consensus statement which is then sent to our Congressman and Senator.

In the 1830's Alexis Tocqueville wrote his classic Democracy in America citing America's intense inclination to form civic organizations as a key to her unprecedented ability to make democracy work. If you enjoy discussing issues, if you want to experience the difficulty of numerous folks searching for common ground and the joy of achieving it, we welcome you to join us on the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 to 11:00 at the Broomfield Senior Center. This event is free.
