6th-graders raise money for teacher with cancer

When Aspen Creek K-8 6th-grade science teacher Mike Romero was diagnosed with lung cancer last fall, students and staff wasted no time coming up with ways to show they care. Friday hat day donations became a weekly event at the school.

With medical costs mounting, every contribution helps. That's why sixth-graders Monro Obenauer, Elise Steichen, Lindsey Sarazen and Dayna DeMeritte decided to organize a lemonade stand and donate all the proceeds to Mr. Romero, which will help pay mounting medical bills. After making posters, hand-squeezed lemonade and treats, the girls were ready to go. They decided to set up shop at the Eagle Trace neighborhood entrance off of Main Street to attract as many customers as possible. It worked. In a short few hours, they raised $47.33. These girls are proud of their efforts motivated by the example of Mr. Romero.

As soon as Mr. Romero was diagnosed with cancer, he quickly began a regimen of chemotherapy, while still dedicating his days to his students. This man has a way with students and emulates an amazing spirit and drive that's contagious. He says students provide him with the energy and inspiration he needs to fight this cancer.

Aspen Creek K-8 is planning an end of the year event to raise even more money for Mr. Romero. "Treats and Sweets For Mr. Romero," an ice cream social and silent auction, will take place on Thursday, May 22, at Aspen Creek from 3:30 to 5 p.m. All of the middle school students are putting together themed gift baskets to be auctioned off that evening. Please come and support Mr. Romero, a beloved teacher and respected member of the community.
