Candidate profile: Patrick Tennyson
Contributed by: Patrick Tennyson on 9/26/2007

Patrick Tennyson is running for Broomfield City Council, Ward I

My name: Patrick Tennyson

Age: 43

My family: My wife's name is Terry and I have two beautiful children named Tanna and Will. They are 6 and 3 respectfull, and I am very proud of my family.

What I do: I am the Director of Education at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster. I have a B.S. in Zoology and a Master's degree in Nonprofit Management. My final master's project as well as an integrated business plan was developed to create long-term, vested corporate partnerships for sustainable, responsible development and social equality in developing nations.

My favorite place in town to hang out: I enjoy taking my kids fishing at the local ponds here in Broomfield. We enjoy eating out at local places like Papa Franks, Pearl Wok or the Blue Parrot in Louisville.

What I like most about living here:I enjoy the open space and still hearing coyotes in the evenings in the summer, while still being close enough to city amenities and the things a family needs to access.

My interests and hobbies: I take pleasure in being outdoors, and spend my spare time enjoying the gifts of nature with my family through fly fishing, hiking and rafting.

What is my favorite thing to cook: I am not really much of a cook, but I can pull together a better than average breakfast burrito - when needed.

People who inspired me (and how): I am inspired by people like Martin Luther King Jr., Caesar Chavez, John Muir, and John F. Kennedy for their vision and foresight to mobilize people in various ways in order to drive social change. I admire people like Bill Gates, E.O Wilson and Amory Lovins who have spent a lifetime thinking outside the box to move society forward. As a father, I also am inspired by my Mother and Father who are both now gone, simply for dedicating themselves to raising a successful family and investing the time to instill uncompromising morals and values in their children.

How I have contributed to the community: For over 15 years I have worked in the field of environmental education and have spent that time working and volunteering in both the educational and leadership capacity of environmental conservation. I am active on a number of boards, including serving a two-year term as Board President for the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education. I also work with a group that supports capacity building for nonprofits working on social and environmental change in Mexico.

What are the biggest issues facing your city now: Broomfield is one of the fasting growing cities in Colorado. Leaders must Intelligently address Broomfield's growth, making land-use planning fair, predictable and cost effective.

Over time, Broomfield will need to embrace sustainability for long-term economic advancement through a sophisticated mix of unique commercial developments that provide diverse job opportunities and a supportive framework for inviting businesses to grow and flourish in Broomfield as part of the greater Denver community.

I believe there needs to be careful and thought out expansion that offers a variety of housing choices if we are to maintain a quality of life that people of Colorado have come to expect. We must at the same time embrace In-fill developments that support an intelligent use of existing space supporting community collaboration on the development of safe, and financially successful infrastructure for livability. Precious natural resources, parks and open spaces, must be fairly assessed for their quantitative and qualitative value to the community. Land use evaluations must consider the enduring significance of providing vital reconnection to our local history and unique and fragile natural heritage while embracing educational prospective and long-term ecological asset potential as well.

With the US -36 corridor as a major artery to the rest of the city, meaningful planning in collaboration with Fas Tracs must continue to support local and regional transportation needs connecting Broomfield to viable city-wide transportation infrastructure that draws on effective mass transportation, rail (with sufficient Broomfield stops) and special traffic lanes. Safe, energy efficient, transportation network including bike trails supported by sufficient park and ride opportunities are key within Broomfield.

As with any city growing at the rate Broomfield is growing, self-sustainability through waste management issues is paramount. Broomfield should embrace an expanded and easily accessible citywide recycling program engaging water conservation and energy efficiency evaluation. Ensuring effective and efficient improvements are on going and are a vital part of a larger plan, and that they take place in an economically feasible manner so that our community embraces a long-term vision for a cleaner, safer and consequently a more sustainable environment for future generations.
