Red heads turns blond
Contributed by: Ann Brandt on 9/26/2008

Cancer entered our family once again this year when our curly-hair redhead daughter Cindy was diagnosed with breast cancer--both ductal carcinoma insitu and invasive lymphatic vascular carcinoma. The last is the most worrisome. As she lives in Eagle we wondered where she could get the best care possible without driving to Denver.

We needn't haven't wondered. Shaw Cancer Center in Edwards is part of the Vail Valley Medical Center and has some of the most competent medical staff in Colorado, some of whom trained at University Hospital in the Denver area.Cindy finished her radiation and chemotheray in August and is at the point now she wonders what color her hair will be. First indications tell us the hair will be light blond.

During Cindy's summer of cancer we saw the best and the worst of the human race. Thankfully, the best is what sticks in our minds. The sisterhood that emerged during the most troubled time right after diagnosis assured us that our daughter living so many miles from us had support and nurturing when we could not be with her. Also, in our family: Two of her siblings came from thousands of miles away to support and help with whatever needed doing in the household where Cindy is raising two sons, one a special needs child, on her own.
My husband George is a cancer survivor also, having endured treatments for brain cancer ten years ago. His ability to offer encouragement and advice to Cindy added to the valuable cadre of support so necessary in fighting cancer of any kind. We are convinced that cancer survivorshave the ability to pass on the gift of hope in a way no one else can.

So now the question persists: What will emerge, a redhead or a blond?
