What Energy Policy?
Contributed by: Steve Johnson on 8/28/2008

As the Democrats meet in Denver, we find out they are out of touch with the will of the people. Nancy Pelosi seems to be pulling the strings on all the Democrats in Congress.
Nancy Pelosi was on "Meet the Press" this past Sunday. Want to know what the Democratic Energy Policy will really be? Go to:

Just one of the gems from Nancy Pelosi:

"REP. PELOSI: No, it isn't, but you could--again, you could reduce the price at the pump immediately with...(unintelligible). You can have a transition with natural gas. You can have a transition with natural gas. That, that is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels. So, so there is a way to transition this instead of doing more of the same. The Bush administration, two oil men in the White House, they want us to believe that the status quo is what we should do and more of it--and more of it, when it will just only keep us in the same place that we are now."

"REP. PELOSI: No, no, it was between 50 and $100,000, and it's part of an, you know, entrepreneurial package. This is the package we sign up for, this is what they invest in. But that's not the point. I'm, I'm, I'm investing in something I believe in. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels."

Let's see if I got this right. We can drill for Natural Gas on our own soil but not Oil? Or maybe she thinks we can set up some kind of Methane Gas recovery systems on Cattle Feed Lots. We can draw down the Strategic Oil Reserve and have a temporary effect on the price of gas at the pump, we can pass legislation to prevent oil speculation and we can inact a windfall profits' tax. Where does she mentiondrilling formoreOilon our own soil and reduce our dependence on Foreign Oil? It will take decades before any alternative to oil can be brought to market. Just the infrastructure for delivery will be a monumental task.

First, the oil reserve would have to be replaced. Right now that means ForeignOil at the world market price. Stopping speculation may reduce costs and a windfall profits' tax makes sense if you want to bite the hand that feeds you. There is no such thing as a tax that does not affect every one of us.Overhead costs of any business is passed on to the consumer. None of these proposals brings one more barrel of Oil or one more cubic foot of Natural Gas to market.

As for alternative energy sources, Solar is not feasible for long term solutions. The sun does not always shine and during the winter, we only have about 4 hours of solar heat gain available to capture. Wind Power is great, but again sometimes the wind does not blow. Plus, it takes thousands of acres of land to put up a wind farm capable of producing less energy than a coal or gasfired plant. If the current projections are right, we will only be producing 20% of our electical energy by wind power by 2030.

Nuclear is probably the only real long-term solution to our electrical needs in the future, but the Democrats have consistently blocked any new plants. We have not approved a Nuclear Power Plant since the 70's.

Natural Gas is a good mid-term solution. We have an abundance of Natural Gas in the U.S. It is still a fossil fuel (someone needs to let Nancy Pelosi know this) and we still need to drill. Who is going to drill? Big Oil who the democrats love to blame. However, there are lots of road blocks to bringing new sources of Natural Gas to market. In our own state, both Bill Ritter and Ken Salazar oppose drilling on the Roan Plateau where the known reserves are huge. Do you think they'd approveof a giant wind farm or solar collection system on top of the Roan Plateau?

We do need to look ahead for solutions to our energy needs of the future. Right now we need to quickly recover our own natural gas and oil reserves on our own soil. Sending such huge sums of money out of our country makes no sense at all. Unfortunately the Democrats don't seem to understand this yet. We are now spending $700 Billion a year on foreign produced Oil. Look what that has done to our economy. And the Democrats Platform has an estimated $683 Billion in proposed taxspending to pay for all their wonderful programs. Where is the money for Food, Rent, Clothing, College etc going to come from?

We do need solutions that produce energy now, not hot air.

As a side note, I find it ironic that John Edwards was banned from speaking at the Democratic National Convention because he had an affair and lied about it and Bill Clinton is a Keynote Speaker because he had an affair and lied about it.
