Cherry Creek & Tigers Rugby Combine U-16 Forces

The coaches for each team played together in the 1990s with Queen City Rugby Football Club in Denver. John Oberly (CC), a crafty and hard running 8-man; and Paul O'Brian (Tigers RFC), a prop and flanker, and Pat Quinlan (Tigers), a back line player, were each formerly captains of the club, had run together on the rugby pitches of Colorado for at least 5 years with the QCRFC Rams. They were truly legends in their own minds. The older they get, the better they were.

The Tigers Rugby players formed most of the pack of forwards (bigger guys), while Cherry Creek brought mostly backs (better looking guys) to the effort. Numerous opportunities for the speedy Munier Raheid, who picked up the first try of the day for the "Cherry Tigers" (blame the SWARM coach for name calling). Dominic Caviness (CC) took the helm at Fly Half, getting put outs form Alejandro Lucero (HF). Anthony Mascariello (CC) played the outside center position, and collected one try and 2 conversion kicks. Matt Klasco fought through a sore thigh to guard the left Wing. Danny Miklin (CC) ran wild for two tries and Noah Frieder kept them in scoring range with good control of the kicking game from fullback.

The Cherry Tigers took the ball in scrums and line-outs with a pack of Holy Family students. Patrick O'Connor, Duncan Yost, Rob Nees, Jacob Gossman and Oliver Smith formed the tight five of the scrum with Joseph Gonzales of Centaurus HS. Gonzales played hooker and scored one try. The back row was well represented by Tim Sullivan (HF) at 8-man and Faith Christian Academy's Daniel Sargeant at flanker.

The combined side has a 3-1-2 record, losing only to Denver East in three Colorado Youth Rugby Festival events for the underclassmen. They will play together yet again in Boulder on April 31st at Pleasant View Park.
