Blog Entry 22 of 97 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

I voted
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 11/8/2006

It was about two and a half hours of standing in line, but I'm very proud to have voted in the Nov. 7 elections. I became a U.S. citizen in February 2003 and couldn't wait to participate in the voting process. I opted for an absentee ballot for the 2004 elections since I was still trying to settle in Denver and my permanent address was in another county.

I wasn't sure what to expect last night, but I knew it was going to be a long wait. I cut out of work early -- just in case -- but I still ended up waiting till about 7 p.m. to actually vote. Sure, there were moans and groans from the people standing in line with me. I'll be honest -- I was annoyed with the standing and the waiting. But I knew this was important and for one night, I would be willing to stick it out.

The volunteers there tried to make the experience as painless as possible. They were handing out waters, snacks and later on in the evening, they gave out Quiznos dinners. I didn't get a sandwich, though. Oh well.

I voted via the old punch-button machines (I was a little sad I couldn't use the new ones) and felt relief and excitement when I hit "Cast Vote." As I exited the room, I saw a man handing out stickers with "I voted" written on them. He told me he was starting to run out, but I wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I stood in line -- darn it -- I was going to have my sticker.

Although I'm disappointed with some of the results from last night's elections, I'm very happy that I was able to put my two cents in. Every vote counts. This year was a lesson in taking advantage of early voting, which I will definitely do next time.
