I think about a lot of things. I have opinions about most. What good are thoughts and opinions when not shared? I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours. Issues related to education really get me going. I love to dine on the hot potatoes of school accountability, standardized testing, corporal punishment in schools (outlawed in only about 28 states), scrutiny of school staff before hiring, teacher performance standards, and the weeding out of bad apples in education. I promote fitness as the miracle drug most of us seek. No pill will duplicate the health benefits of working our bodies. I strongly support the adage, "Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die." The world does not need more puppies or kittens. A visit to a local shelter is proof. I consider myself schooled in basic personal money management, the entrepreneurial spirit, domestic adoption, motherood in middle age, Baby Boomer issues, Southern culture, and how to cook a meal in twenty minutes. Whew. So, where shall we start?

I blogged about the sudden appearance of a lush plant in front of our house a couple of weeks ago near our Halloween pumpkin carving spot last fall. It now seems apparent at least one pumpkin seed from last fall escaped the fate of the garbage bag and germinated. I wasn't completely sure whether the fast growing plant was actually pumpkin or a mere look-alike. I'm sure now. The thing is at least five feet long and blooming!
The consensus among neigborhood amateur horticulturists is yes, indeed, the plant is pumpkin. However, it is off to a tardy start and will not likely bear fruit before it gets too cold outside.
I am rooting for this plant. Not just rooting; betting. I think she's a good bet for at least the production of some small fruit before winter sets in. Wanna take the bet? Golf ball size pumpkins or bigger, I win. Fruit smaller than a golf ball or no fruit at all, you win. The wager is a pumpkin pie.
C'mon, pumpkin plant!

You're on with that bet... I've had similar results with my tomatoes this year - golf ball size and not much bigger...

It has been slightly warm this year, perhaps the winter won't set in too early. Go pumpkin!

Alright, Katherine! I'll take your wager. Joe, are you in? And, yes, I am sure somewhere tiny people play golf with hail size golf balls. You guys should see the blooms. This is one industrious plant!

Nice play on words. Evidently the pumpkin is actually rooting for you! I've heard of golf ball size hail but never g-b size pumpkins. Are there such things as hail size golfballs?

I think I'll take the bet. For whatever reason, pumpkins grow best on hills. Also, the first flowers are sometimes male, I think, and don't bear fruit. Is there a bulb under the blossom?
