House District 37 Candidates
Debate the Issues at the Southglenn Library

Voters Can View Debate Online at www.angelalistens.org

On September 25, at the Southglenn Library in Centennial, the Arapahoe High School Young Democrats hosted a debate for the House District 37 race between candidates Angela Engel (D) and Spencer Swalm (R). Video coverage of the debate has been posted online and voters can watch it and see where each candidate stands on the issues by directing their internet browser to www.angelalistens.org.

After a brief introduction, each candidate fielded questions by the moderator and an audience of about 40 people. A crowd completely filled the meeting room and was overwhelmingly supportive of Angela Engel. The main topics of the debate were the economy, education, and health care. In each case, the differences between the candidates were made crystal clear.

Since the forum was hosted by high school students, it was no surprise that education was a hot topic. Engel, a former teacher and a veteran children's advocate for the past 15 years, believes that the legislature needs to make educating Colorado's children a priority. Engel pointed out that after years of the Colorado State Assessment Program (CSAP), and millions of dollars, drop-out rates have increased, the achievement gap has widened, and fewer students are earning college degrees. Swalm stated that competition is the answer and that vouchers would improve Colorado Schools.

The debate was the first of at least three debates for the HD37 candidates. The other two debates will be:

* Tuesday, October 3rd @ 7AM, Mimi's Cafe, Lone Tree - Hosted by the Kiwanis Club.

* Wednesday, October 11th @ 7:30AM, 304 Inverness Way South, Room TL-60 (in the basement of the building), Centennial - Hosted by the Southeast Business Partnership.

Angela Engel is a seasoned community leader, educational researcher, and legislative policy advisor, who after winning November's election will work tirelessly at the State House to bring down the cost of health care, strengthen neighborhood schools and actively promote small businesses and entrepreneurship.
