HubCap: This man wants you to read his novel
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 9/27/2006

Bob Whitehas been with YourHub.com since nearly the beginning. Within a few weeks of this Web site making its Internet debut, he started posting a series of columns called "Exposing the Golden Years." In Bob's first few columns, he came off as kind of a cranky old guy, complaining, for example, about foul language he heard while riding the bus.

Later on, his writing became a little more friendly and a more autobiographical. (We don't know if he softened up a little bit or if writing was therapeutic for him.) He wrote about people he met around town, reminisced about his family, and told stories from the days his father owned a thrift store. At this point, he's posted 110 "Exposing the Golden Years" columns, way ahead of the one-a-week pace that we can fit in the paper.

Even with all this writing, Bob decided that he still had enough time to participate in National Novel Writing Month last year. For those who aren't familiar, NaNoWriMo is a phenomenon started in 1999 by a few writers in San Francisco. Every participant tries to write a 175-page novel (50,000 words) between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30. In 2004, more than 42,000 writers participated. The goal is output, not a perfect book.

Last November, Bob cranked out a 50,000-word novel called Acquired Taste. It's a mystery with lots of characters, some UFO action, a little sexiness and a lot of good writing. It's not done yet; far from it, Bob says. He's been posting pieces of Acquired Taste on his blog since March 2006, and has about 40 percent of it up now, spaced out over about 40 blog entries.

Bob wants you to read his novel, one piece at a time, and offer your comments and suggestions. Here's the first section he shared with us, and here's Bob's blog entry summarizing the first 20,000 words.

I've read it up until the very latest entry, and I'll tell you, I think it's pretty great. It takes place in Denver, which is familiar to a lot of people, but it came from Bob's head, which is a place not familiar to a lot of people. But maybe it should be.
