Celebrate Fall on Castlewood Canyon’s Newest Trail
Contributed by: Les Hankerson on 8/14/2007

What:
The East Canyon Preservation Area Trail will be opening this fall. This four-mile trail will take the hiker along the rim of the East Canyon, down across Cherry Creek, up a side canyon and out onto the eastern prairie. It will be easy to imagine what the travelers saw 150 years ago. After our snow and rain this year one can understand why the homesteaders settled the area in the 1860's.

The Park rules for this new trail will be a little stricter than other areas of the Park because it is a preservation area. Hikers must remain on the trail. Dogs will not be allowed. There is no rock climbing in the East Canyon Preservation Area. The goal is to keep it as pristine as it was when the first homesteaders "laid eyes on it".

This trail will not be for everyone. During the wet season you may get your feet wet as you hike around pools and streams in the side canyon. During the hot season the prairie can be...well hot; it is out in the full sun with no shade. However the wildflowers, birds and landscape make the hike worthwhile.

For more information about the opening, visit parks.state.co.us, visit the Visitor Center or call 303-688-5242.
