Wildfire protection plan extending to CPN

During the next few months, the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority will be expanding its Community Wildfire Protection Plan to the I-25/Santa Fe corridors and surrounding areas, including the City of Castle Pines North. A public meeting will be held on April 22 to discuss the CWPP expansion.

The CWPP is an important planning tool that will assist SMFRA in identifying communities at risk for wildfires, allowing SMFRA to target education and mitigation efforts. Having an over-arching fire department, the CWPP also lays the groundwork for activating individual communities, initiating their specific hazards evaluation and taking steps to protect communities.

Community involvement is a critical aspect in developing the CWPP. The goal is for the fire department and citizens to work together to understand hazards, establish priorities and build a partnership, lasting for years to come.

Several grants also may be available to communities involved with the CWPP process, so the SMFRA would like to invite citizens and community members to two upcoming meetings, which will provide background information on the CWPP planning process and allow for community input. Attendance is encouraged.

  • Stakeholder meeting: Friday, April 17, 2009, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Castle Pines Home Association, located at 688 Happy Canyon Rd. Please send one or two representatives from your community.
  • Public meeting: Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Castle Pines North Community Center, located at 7404 Yorkshire Dr.
