What will the future remember about you?Everything
Contributed by: Nicoleta Tiuca on 10/27/2006

Millions of people carefully research their genealogy, and millions more enjoy scrapbooking and building photo albums. Reminiscing and reflecting about experiences and stories, and publishing them so they can be shared with others, has never been more popular. WebBiographiesoffers a freeweb-based service that aims to inspire those people, and the millions of others yet to take the plunge into personal publishing, to go online and create something that will have lasting significance: an autobiography, complete with photo albums, that can be shared with family and friends, today. And that will stay online for future generations to enjoy.

"It all started because I realized how little I knew about my grandparents and those who came before them," said Scott Purcell, WebBiographies' president. "I thought 'why do I live if only to be forgotten?' So I created WebBiographies to fill a real need in many people's lives. Our members can share their memories and to document their lives for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations. We've designed WebBiographies to make it easy for anyone to organize their life-story, to invite friends and relatives to add their comments and observations, and to document their life in rich detail."

Taking first steps is easy

The question faced by anyone considering writing his or her autobiography is "where to begin?" WebBiographies simplifies this daunting process. Once a person has registered, the "About Me" page steps them through a series of questions to establish basic facts. Next, the "Bio Wizard" helps them start writing their biography by suggesting topics that trigger memories and stories. Members, called "Biographers," can begin posting their memories into any of the pre-defined chapters of their biography, including: family, growing up, work, health, romance, life & friends, hobbies, education, travel and adventures, culinary, entertainment, holidays, and advice.

Biographers can easily create their own sub-chapters and rename any of the chapters to tailor the site and reflect their own life-story. Whenever a new entry is posted, it is featured in a "What's New" section and, optionally, an email alert can be sent to friends and family to invite their comments. Photos and videos can be added to any section and organized into annotated photo albums, and any post or section can be made private via password protection.

Purcell thinks many people will use WebBiographies as their primary web log-a place to share today's thoughts and memories with family members. He added, "What better place to blog than in your autobiography so your descendants will better know you?"

Your memories will live on

WebBiographies provides permanentFREE storage of up to 10 megabytes to registered users. Up to 100MB of storage costs $2.25 per month and 2GB of storage costs $9.25 per month. The online biography of a member who passes away is sealed and kept online forever, with no further fees.
