Joyce Slaughter – who is 75 years old! - is busier than Santa Claus these days. As a Senior Companion for Seniors Incorporated, she visits as many as 10 senior citizens a day, during the holidays and all year long. She delivers smiles and laughter and lends a listening ear to seniors, some of whom are ill, homebound or isolated. Others, like 90-year-old Veronica Urban, simply enjoy Joyce’s company. During a recent visit, Joyce and Veronica shared stories of their youthful adventures, including whitewater rafting and motorcycle riding!
“The Senior Companions brighten these seniors’ days by making them feel valued and showing them they are still an important part of our community” said Jackie Trainer, director of the Senior Companion program for Seniors Incorporated, which is a respected, non-profit organization that has been serving Colorado seniors and their families for 36 years.
The Senior Companion program is especially important during the holidays, which can be difficult or even depressing for some seniors, particularly those who have lost loved ones or are separated from family and friends.
The holidays are also a time when distant families come together. Adult children are often surprised to find their aging parents now need help with daily life. It may seem that mom or dad has transformed from an active, independent senior to someone who needs help with such basic tasks as maintaining their home, preparing meals and paying bills.
Fortunately, that kind of assistance is available from a variety of organizations and can make it possible for aging loved ones to remain in their own homes. Seniors Incorporated offers Concepts In Home Care, which provides in-home services ranging from help with transportation, housework and meal preparation, to round-the-clock care, provided by professional caregivers who are trained, insured and dedicated.
