Castle Pines North officials are preparing to launch a public relations effort designed to encourage shoppers to keep their dollars at local businesses. The city will begin collecting a 2.75 percent city sales tax on all local purchases beginning July 1, which will help fund everything from infrastructure costs to community development, said
Doug Gilbert
, treasurer for Castle Pines North. The sales tax was approved when residents approved to incorporate in November. "We're dedicated to providing a higher level of services for the community, which is why it's important to shop locally," Gilbert said. Local business owners will be required to apply for a new license, which will cost $5, he said. The city is holding two seminars to inform business owners about the application process and to answer questions about the tax. The city also is preparing to conduct an economic development assessment that will, among other things, begin the process of branding Castle Pines North, Gilbert said. "It will be looking at questions like 'what are we as a community, why would a business want to locate here and why would a tourist want to come here,'" he said. Business in the Pines, which currently functions as the city's chamber of commerce, will soon be renamed to the Castle Pines Chamber of Commerce to help assist with marketing efforts, Gilbert said. Castle Pines North currently is home to approximately 65 businesses, not including home-based businesses, he said. Most of those are located in the areas next to Safeway and King Soopers as well as Village Square. Gilbert said there's still room in those three areas to help grow the local economy. The new Lagae Ranch development, scheduled to break ground in coming months, also may have a commercial area for new businesses, he said.
