The Douglas County High School Huskies varsity cheerleaders are striving to make the 2006-07 season one to remember. Not only does this team have the goal of becoming state champs, but more importantly, to make a difference in their community. So far, the team is off to a great start.
Kicking off the year with a varsity IHOP initiation, new freshmen and sophomores were welcomed to the group. Now the hard work begins. Following this fun event, the cheerleaders head off to camp at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The camp, judged by the Universal Cheerleaders Association, consisted of31 teams this year. The Huskies cheerleaders managed to come away from camp with first place for their performance, Camp Champs and most importantly, the leadership award (a.k.a. the banana). The banana is a wonderful award to receive because all teams vote on the one team that they would most like to be a part of if they couldn't choose their own team. The judges announced that the DCHS cheerleaders had won by a "landslide."
The cheerleaders participate in many fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the very expensive sport of cheerleading. One of the favorite fundraisers is the Huskies Pups Cheer Clinic. With the two clinics held so far, over 180 future cheerleaders of the Castle Rock community came out to learn new cheers, dances and how to have fun being a cheerleader. Then the Huskies Pups were able to demonstrate what they learned by cheering at one of the DCHS Varsity Football games.
Along with the privilege of cheering for the 2005 state championship DCHS varsity football team comes competitions. The cheerleaders have their first competition under their belt for the 2006-07 season. In September, the DCHS Cheerleaders took first place at the Elitch's Spirit Fest 2006 Competition. There will be several competitons in November leading to the much anticipated state championships in December. Stay tuned!
The cheerleaders are committedto having a stronger and more positive presence in their community. Many of the team members participated in the Firemen's Fill the Boot to help Jerry's Kids with MDA in Castle Rock. Team members helped the Make A Wish Foundation, sponsored by Village Fitness of Castle Pines,
www.villagefitnessclub.com
, by holding a car wash to raise money to help a local Castle Rock person living with Leukemia.
The team has chosen to purchase warm hats and gloves, for cheering at the cold games, from the Animal Rescue Web site:
www.shop.theanimalrescuesite.com
. As a result, 700 bowls of food will be donated to the animal shelters. In the past years, the team sold items at the Castle Rock Starlighting to raise money to help with cheer expenses. This year, in lieu of raising money for the team, the cheerleaders will cheer and give out candy for donations. All monies raised will be donated to a local charity here in the community.
If you know of a need here in our community, e-mail
Julie Robinson
with your ideas at

. As you can see, the DCHS cheerleaders are off to a great start with their goal of making a difference in 2006.
Behind every great team are great coaches. The team is very fortunate to have Head Coach
Nicole Gambatese
along with Assistant Coach
Melissa Dieker
. The team choregrapher and tumbling coach is
Jon Baran
. Kudos to these individuals for all of the time and hard work put in to making the DCHS Huskies cheerleaders a successful team and program.
Now with all this being said, it is my pleasure to nominate the DCHS varsity cheerleaders for the Athlete of the Week Award sponsored by the American Furniture Warehouse. This team definitely deserves recognition within their community for a job well done.
