Castle Rock -- The defending state champion
Douglas County Huskies
passed easily through the first round of the Class 5A CHSAA state high school playoffs by defeating
Fruita-Monument
by the final score of 49-14.
The Huskies running back,
Ryan Misare,
appeared unstoppable during the first quarter, scoring on a spectacular 80-yard run and finishing the quarter with another 20 yard run to the end zone. As the second quarter began, Fruita tried to regroup and handle Misare but it was to no avail. Misare took the ball in from the 21-yard line to close out the first half 21-0 Huskies.
Halftime is the time for a losing team to regroup, go over plays with the coach, and map out a new strategy to make a comeback. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, you can only do so much. When the second half kicked off, Misare inevitably got the ball and the outcome was preordained, with yet another score on a 43-yard run into the promised land. Whew
!
Apparently even Misare had to take a break and this gave the Huskies'
Jose Astorga
a shot at the end zone and he didn't disappoint. Astorga ran into the end zone from the five.
Fruita did not want to travel to Castle Rock and be shut out and the Wildcats scored two touchdowns on a
Cody Roberts
run and
Shane Adelman
pass but it just wasn't enough. When the final horn sounded, It was Douglas County Huskies 49, Fruita Monument Wildcats 14. The Huskies play the Arapahoe Warriors next Saturday, Nov. 11, in round 2 of the playoffs. To see a streaming video of the games highlights,
