Huskies cheerleaders win the banana
Contributed by: Cindy Weatherly on 6/16/2006

The Douglas County High School cheerleaders won big at the Univeral Cheerleaders Association Cheer Camp in June at the University of Colorado. The camp this year consisted of approximately31 teams from all areas of Colorado and from as far away as Mexico.

The cheerleaders worked very hard while at camp learning new cheers, new dances and how to really get the students involved and enthusiastic at school pep rallies. The teams had the opportunity to mingle with other cheerleaders while bonding and team building as a new group. Much work must take place before attending this camp.

In order to make the cheer squad a competitive success, coach Nicole Gambatese and coach Paige Hanafee held tryouts in early April and chose the next school year's teams. After the teams were chosen, the grueling process of conditioning and practicing immediately began in the hot summer sun.

The DC cheerleaders are sponsored by Village Fitness of Castle Pines. The cheerleaders are very fortunate to be able to use this state of the art facility. Since competitive cheerleading has evolved into such an athletic sport, the cheerleaders have to be in tip-top shape and having a facility such as Village Fitness to work out in is a big plus. While the practices and conditioning continued, the coaches also prepared the teams for camp. The teams arrived at camp ready to perform and shine.

The teams are judged on their prepared dance, enthusiasm, leadership ability, team spirit and a camp-prepared performance. The cheerleaders performed on the last day of camp for the UCA judges, parents and friends. At the end of camp, the Douglas County High School cheerleaders won first place for their performance at camp and they won Camp Champs along with the much anticipated spirit stick.

But the awards that they are most proud of are thebanana and the leadership award. In order to win this award, all of the teams at camp vote on the team that they would most like to be a part of if they could not pick their own team. The teams waited withbaited breath as the announcer got ready to present this award. He announced that the winning team had "won by a landslide," and presented the award to the Douglas County Huskies cheerleaders! What a great way to start off the new season.
