Blog Entry 4 of 7 Fresh Air and a little vinegar
It's pretentious, I think, to write my own blog intro, but Here We Go! If you want to read an ongoing blog soundly based in the living, breathing, world, and not on the stifling and bizarre theories of liberal academia, this is your blog. If you love to gain meaningful and inspiring knowledge, then you've come to the right place. If you like the outdoors and can't stand staying inside any longer than you have to, this is your blog! If you want to hear a teen's perspective on things, and wonder just how much 'our generation' can achieve, you might want to read this blog too.

Cub Scout shootout
Contributed by: Johnathan Osborn   on 5/22/2008

It was Pack 781's May campfire, a two day event that was designed to bring participating Cub Scouts up to speed on their Scouting skills. Swarms of little people drifted across Bear Creek Lake State Park, migrating from activity to activity.I, along with two other members of my troop, had the (dubious?) privilege of helping at the Archery station.

The thing with Cub Scouts is that they have about a three-to-five minute attention span, which is unusually long for people their age. This entails that the range master give them the safety rules first, followed by some advice about shooting form. (i.e. "hold the string with three or two fingers, not a whole fist, stand side on to the target, aim"and so on) However, by the time the august range master gets to this part of his speech, the audience is usually fidgeting and/or staring blankly into space.

Finally, after what must have seemed like an eternity, the"cubbies"got to shoot. Even though the targets are only 15 feet away, soon arrowswere smacking into the foam squares with uncanny accuracy, propelled lazily through the air by tiny 20 pound longbows. The youthful archers exalted in their own prowess. "I got two bullseyes!" one told me,"only, only the second one didn't stick."

About three hours later, the range master called a halt to all rounds, and the archery equipment was quickly packed away. Some of the Cub Scouts begged the assistants for just one more round, or the chance to shoot tomorrow.
Hopefully, some of those kids will take up archery seriously as a sport. Hopefully you, the reader, will too, if you haven't already.

It's cheap, and can develop coordination, discipline, self-esteem and accuracy. It also is one of the safest, most relaxing sports around. (If a few basic safety rules are followed.)

"Let Princes therefore shoot for exercise,
Soldiers to enlarge their magnanimities,
Let Nobles shoot 'cause 'tis a pastime fit
Let Scholars shoot to clarify their wit,
Let citizens shoot to purge corrupted blood,
Let Yeomen shoot for King's and nation's good,
Let all the Nation archers prove, and then,
We without lanthorns may find virtuous men."

Johnathon, Good writing! I remember as a kid my brother had a bow. We spent hours shooting at the target on the hay bales....
