Really, that's all my writing is. I appreciate your input / feedback and I encourage each of you to try writing and submitting yourself! The worst that can happen (we hope) is you will be called asinine and an idiot, or clueless, and if I can get over THAT, surely you can too.

The great pumpkin, beachballs, and paper mache’
Contributed by: Michael Rule   on 10/21/2007

When I was young, it seemed we made most of our Halloween costumes. The incredible variety of store bought costumes available today just wasn't around back then.

This led to some interesting and at times quite imaginative looking ghouls and goblins out walking the streets of our hometown. My favorite costumes, though, were of the Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown, as invented by my older sister Sue.

I was in elementary school at the time, maybe 4 th grade. What my sister did still impresses me today with it's originality. She started with the biggest beachball she could find, inflated it and covered it with paper mache'.

Does anyone still do paper mache' today? You start with strips of newspaper and a concoction of flour and water to make a paste. The exact recipe escapes me.

Anyways, she covered the ball with a heavy layer of paper mache', let it dry, then deflated and removed the beachball. Next she cut out openings to get your torso up into this creation, along with arm and eye openings.

Finally came the paint and a perfect rendition of The Great Pumpkin,a sheet dyed black with a hole in the middle to drape over you and voila! You had The Great Pumpkin floating through the night. The whole procedure was repeated to bring Charlie Brown to life as well. They were cool.

These costumes hung around for years. Stored in the attic, they were brought down at Halloween so various kids could wear them. I have no idea what happened to them, and I have tried in vain to find pictures in the family archives.

We had a lot of pretty cool costumes as kids, not the least of which was my Robin (of Batman and Robin fame) outfit hand sewn by my mom, but my sister's creation of The Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown were the best.

I sewed a ton of costumes for my kids when they were little. They've been everything from the Pink Panther to Ninja Turtles. I would like to say those were fond memories of yesteryear, but at 27 and 23, I'm still sewing costumes for them! I now have a new grandson so I guess I'll be making Halloween costumes until they wheel me out on a stretcher.

my favorite was when I put together a "geisha girl" costume straight from Japan, complete with white face makeup and all....then took my 10 year old out trick or treating - the homeowners kept saying "come on honey, it's ok, come on up and get some candy." I was so made up and still my petite, short self, (at 33) they thought I was one of the kids!

When I was little, my mom put together a lot of my Halloween costumes. She sewed a tooth pillow together when I was the tooth fairy, she sewed a clown costume, a witch's costume ... pretty much made everything. I carried that tradition through high school when I came up with crazy, handmade ideas for Halloween. Really, ask me about my tornado costume sometime. Now, it's all generic and mass produced. Too bad.

Nice story Mick. My husband always made our kids great costumes, mummies, robots with silver dryer vent arms, etc. He comes from a gene pool of artistic talent, including a grandfather who specialized in paper mache. (Your spelling is perfect). We have a beautiful paper mache Rhino, and a collection of Toucans, Owls and more. He used old phone books for his pieces.

I remember that pumpkin! Sue and mom were always great with the costumes. My fav was when they dressed me as a martian...green face and all...and the green stuck! That was fun. :)

So that's where the Great Pumpkin is. Here we've been sitting out in the cold every Halloween for decades waiting and freezing our buns off and he has been stored in your attic! (Note: I'm old enough to know what an attic is.)
