In an attempt to give some of you newcomers an insight into the local spots about the area, here are my totally biased, fairly random, not really researched picks for 2008.
Best bar Hands down,
The Spur of the Moment in Larkspur. One of those "everybody knows your name" places with Newcastle on tap. What more could you ask for?
Best place for a Bloody Mary Has to be
Pegasus Restaurant in Castle Rock. Where else can you get souvlaki and eggs with your BM?
Best car mechanics Another no-brainer. Todd and Donald at
Sedalia Tire and Auto in Sedalia have been taking care of my vehicles for years. If you value honesty and fair prices these guys are the best.
Best small engine mechanic Need to get your lawn mower or snow blower running? You might have to drive a bit, but nobody is better than Dave at
Monmument Small Engine in Monument. He's not as grouchy as he acts, he keeps my chainsaws running sweet, and he even came to our wedding. What more could you ask for?
Best place for an oil change The guys at
Rocky Mountain Oil Change in Castle Rock have been keeping our fluids clean for a couple of years now. They're honest and do a great job. And don't worry, Phil is just as grouchy as he acts: it isn't you.
Best front of a parking garage The front of the Castle Rock town hall looks more like a parking garage than the parking garage. Awesome.
Best drive on pavement In the mood for a cruise? Try Hwy 105 south out of Sedalia, past Perry Park, through Palmer Lake and Monument to Hwy 83. Go north towards Franktown then take Lake Gulch Rd. back to Castle Rock. Lots of watering holes along the way, too.
Best drive on dirt Not worried about a little mud on your Hummer?Rampart Range Rd. will show you a whole different side of Douglas County. Take Hwy 67 west from Sedalia about 8 miles to find it. Take some snacks, or better yet a bottle of wine and your sweetheart. Just don't do it on a weekend in the summer unless your idea of romance is watching (and listening to) dirt bikes.
Best new Open Space The county is putting the finishing touches on the parking area at
Dawson Butte Open Space off Tomah Rd., and I've got to tell you, this place is killer. Just don't tell anyone else, okay?
Best liquor store This one was tough, but I have to go with Chin and his wife at
Plum Creek Liquors in Castle Rock, because he once gave me a cool wine rack with oak leaves on it.
Bubbles for their selection and
Larkspur Liquors for their cute dogs deserve the only honorable mentions I'm giving out, though.
Best props for a hack writer Sometimes I voice my frustrations, but it is only because I love them all. Thanks to everyone at
YourHub for creating this venue. I love it and hope it keeps growing and evolving.
Happy New Year everyone!
